Twinning is an attempt by people from two places (cities, towns, areas) to interact, help eachother and exchange experiences.
It is a precious method of increasing mutual awareness of eachothers society, eachothers beliefs and way of life. A way of getting past news coverage, propaganda and preconceptions to see the daily life and true spirit of both peoples.
Recent reports from Jenin
Why Jenin? Why Tower Hamlets?
Jenin refugee camp in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) is a very densly populated and unbelievably destitute camp yet entering the camp love, interest, compassion and enthusiasm overwhelms the visitor. The people of Jenin are eager to hear from, talk to and understand the world to which they have very limited access. Many have been searching for such an opportunity, and have now found it.
Tower Hamlets is one of the poorest boroughs in Great Britain yet what it lacks in material wealth it easily makes up for in the rich multi-cultural mix of its populace. Many are particularly aware of the serious problems the world faces, and this initiative gave many the chance to interact with, understand and hopefully positively affect a place which is often so neglected.
